Historical and Folklore Museum of Portaria

The Historical and Folklore Museum of Portaria is housed in Zulia mansion in picturesque Portaria. The building, a characteristic example of the architecture of Pelion, dates back to 1864 and it used to be a vocational School for Girls.

In the museum you will find a permanent historical and folklore exhibition with various objects, relics, photographs, paintings, etc. that show the history and the locals` way of living. Most of the exhibits are authentic, original and give you the opportunity to get to know some of the elements of economic and cultural development in the wider area –focusing on the way of life and reintegration of the Egyptians in the region– from the beginning of the 19th century up to the middle of the 20th century.

There are various rooms in the museum, such as the one dedicated to the Egyptians, to education, to the private life of Portaria residents, to Theoxenia hotel and to S. Porfyris.

The building was characterised Work of Art and Historic Listed Monument by the Ministry of Culture in 1985.
