Historical and Folklore Museum of Portaria
The Historical and Folklore Museum of Portaria is housed in the two-storey Zoulias Mansion, which was built in 1864. It is a representative sample of the "Egyptian" mansions, built in the second half of the 19th century by Pelioreites, with property from their activities mainly in Egypt.
The building was classified as preserved and restored by the 5th Ephorate of New Monuments in collaboration with the community of Portaria. Since 1995 it houses the Historical and Folklore Museum of Portaria.
The collections of the Museum are exhibited on the 2 floors of the building covering the spaces of 7 rooms, the central hall and the staircase. They include evidence of the administrative and economic development of the Municipality of Orminio and the later Community of Portaria (documents, minutes of the Municipal Council, electoral rolls, census 1881), what was saved from the luxury hotel of the beginning of the 20th century "Mega Theoxenia", photographs, documents and other evidence for the presence of the Portarites in the land of Egypt at the beginning of the 20th century.
The private and social life of the Portarites is also presented as seen through photographs, clothing, household utensils, objects of daily use, postcards, documents, announcements and wedding photographs from 1885 to 1950, as well as hand-made embroideries (mainly lace), elaborate works of village women. Dedicated to the history of the area`s schools is the room that includes photographs, objects and rare books (1880 – 1945), unique documents of the educational history of the place.
In the hall of the Sports & Cultural Association of Portaria "Orminio" local traditional costumes, documents and photos about the activities of the Association and objects of the revival of the Pelioreite Wedding custom are exhibited.
